Schultz and Greentree Star at Hawks Awards Night

SJohn Schultz and Billy Greentree stood out at the Tea Gardens Hawks 2016 presentation night held last week.

John Schultz was awarded the Hawks supporters trophy ahead of Nathan Ruse and Ben Mossop. He was the ‘player’s player’ choice narrowly from Nick Clarke and Ben Mossop. His points culminated three ahead of Billy Greentree, then Jack Beverley and Trent Murphy to take the 2016 Graham Haywood Memorial Player of the Year trophy.

Schultz was also one point behind the winner of the Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League’s “A” Grade Player of the Year award.

The Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League’s “A” Grade Player of the Year award was won by Billy Greentree. Greentree was also the highest points scorer in “A” Grade in 2016. In the Hawks awards he was the Referee’s Best and Fairest, ahead of John Schultz and Leigh Kelly. He was also voted the Best in Attack. CJ Misifosa and John Schultz were runners up.

In other awards, Nathan Ruse was the Best in defense, from Trent Murphy and Jack Beverley. Ruse was also awarded the Most Consistent.

Jack Beverley was the Coach’s choice, while Ben Mossop was the President’s vote.
The “Jack Grace Memorial Rookie of the Year” was CJ Misifosa.

Secretary Neil Reynolds thanked the players and staff for their efforts throughout the year. Special mention was given to the Club’s sponsors, who have enabled the Hawks to maintain a strong presence in the competition.

Praises for Brooke Roach’s efforts were forwarded. Roach’s efforts are paramount to the Hawks success in “A” Grade.

Brooke Roach has committed to the 2017 campaign as coach, and will maintain a strong presence on the paddock. He particularly thanked the players from the Mallabula club who played the year for the Hawks. As players in the club well know, it is a task to turn out for another team while your Club is not functioning.

Players will take a well-earned rest over the Christmas holidays and return to official training after the January long weekend.

In Club news, a full committee was elected at the annual general meeting, with last year’s executive re-elected.
Rob Smith will lead a strong team, with several appointments made to individual roles. The Supporters Club Christmas party will be held in December.

A proposal to enter a second side from the area has gained some momentum. Over the last number of years, many players have dropped away, when not able to get consistent game time in the “A” Grade side. While the side would have to play separate to the Hawks, it is aimed at maintain a strong League side in the area.
