Scaps to Soil free composting workshop

Let’s Get Composting Coffs Coast.

THE Scraps to Soil Composting Workshop is a free instructive session to be held at Nambucca Heads Growing Together Community Garden, run by Nambucca Valley Council, MidWaste and the Let’s Get Composting team.

“Come along to this free workshop to find out how to get started composting and worm farming at home to create rich compost to make your garden grow,” said Ali Bigg, MidWaste Coordinator.

“You will learn the value of composting and how it works, setting up your system, managing and maintaining your new compost bin or worm farm, how to use compost products, troubleshooting and more.

This program is part of the Let’s Get Composting Coffs Coast initiative, which is designed to support the Nambucca, Bellingen and Coffs communities to make the most of their kerbside bins and save money in the process.

“We focus on food waste avoidance, getting food scraps into the green bin and, for the keen beans, how to get creative with composting,” Ali told News Of The Area.

“We want all food scraps going into the green Council bin (or being composted at home).

“A lot of people don’t realise the range of items that can go into their green bin – basically if you made a meal from it, the scraps can go in the green bin.

“If organics get into landfill, the process of compaction, which is a daily requirement, creates an airless environment which means it produces methane – the worst thing you could do with your organic waste.

“Each household can help avoid around 100kg of food waste from entering our waste stream every year, and instead it can easily be turned into valuable fertile soil or nutrient rich liquid fertiliser – either for the community if you use your green bin, or for yourself if you compost at home.

“We have joined up with the Compost Revolution to provide heavily subsidised equipment to the community to enable them to turn their food and garden scraps into a valuable resource.”

The Compost Revolution is a social venture that partners with councils to make it easy for residents to get into home composting.

“Whether you’re a seasoned composter or just starting out, Compost Revolution gives you the skills and support you need to eliminate food waste and improve your garden.

“There’s loads of practical tips and information on the program website www.letsgetcomposting.org.au including where to pick up your free Kitchen Caddy, the range of items that can go in the green bin and details of the offer of affordable composting bins and worm farms for residents who want to reap the rewards of home composting, are keen gardeners, or for those who don’t have a kerbside green bin service, and families who want to teach their kids about composting,” said Ali.

The Let’s Get Composting Coffs Coast program is a NSW Environment Protection Authority initiative funded from the Waste Levy.
