Sawtell/Toormina Saints win grand final rematch against Grafton Tigers

THE Sawtell/Toormina Saints have earnt some redemption after winning their grand final rematch against the Grafton Tigers.

The Saints won 15.9 (99) to 8.10 (58) during Round 7 of the AFL North Coast season at Richardson Park.

After an even first half the Saints went into the sheds holding a slender five-point lead.

The second half would be a different story as the Saints asserted their authority, dominating the contest as they kicked nine goals and kept the Tigers to three goals to seal the 41-point victory and win their first meeting since the 2020 grand final.

Connor Perks kicked four goals for the Saints while Angus Anderson and Ronan Singleton both kicked three goals.

Saints coach Brandt Lee praised the contributions of his young players.

““The young guys step up for us every week, even though we’ve got experienced leaders like Luke Matthews back in the team now, it’s the young guys like Tyler Donovan, Ronan Singleton and Luke Neal who are impressive,” the coach said.

“Those younger guys, when they play well, we know we’re going to be in for a good win.”

The Coffs Harbour Breakers continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 159-point belting of the Casino Lions at Fitzroy Oval.

The win was the Breakers seventh in a row to start the season as they remain the only undefeated team this season.

The Northern Beaches Blues also continued their own winning streak with a 64-point victory against the Port Macquarie Magpies in Woolgoolga.

The win was the Blues fourth in a row and sees them sit second on the ladder.

The AFL North Coast season has a bye this weekend due to the long weekend.
