SAWTELL Cricket Club smashed their way to a flying start in the opening round of the Premier League T20 series, defeating the Coffs Coast Colts at Richardson Park.

Sawtell batted first and set the Colts a total of 172 runs for 7 wickets with Trent Dierick scoring 59 runs off 29 balls which included 3 sixes and 8 fours.

Tyh Murphy then hit an unbeaten 58 runs from 37 balls to pile the pressure onto the Colts.

Although the Colts had a promising start with their opening batsmen scoring 40 runs, the wickets fell quickly with the Sawtell bowling attack limiting the Colts to 96 runs for 7 wickets.

It was a standout performance by fifteen year old Colts player James Lobb who took two wickets and four catches, with one of the catches already a contender for catch of the season.

Sawtell captain Richie Gallican was delighted to be back playing again .

“It’s great to be back out on the field again, you can feel the buzz amongst the players.

“Trent Dierick and Tyh Murphy were outstanding with the bat today and really set us up for a good score and gave our bowlers something to work with.

“All of our bowlers were economical and put the pressure on the Colts, the wickets were spread evenly, Charlie Howard and Tomas Neal both got two wickets and Jake McMillan and myself both got a wicket each,” said Richie.

Sawtell’s next match is against Northern Districts on Thursday 4 November at 6pm and the Coffs Colts play Valleys Cricket at the Coffs Coast Sport and Leisure Park also at 6pm on Thursday 4 November.
