THE Sawtell Panthers struck in the last minutes to defeat the Coffs Harbour Comets 24-22 in the under 18s competition at Rex Hardaker Oval one day before the statewide lockdown came into effect.

Opportunities to play at their homeground have been scarce as the Panthers did not field a senior team in the competition but supporters showed their voice as they cheered on the young men into the major semi-final.

Panthers coach Peter Barrett is proud of the commitment from his players.

“I couldn’t be more proud of what these boys show on the field and commitment to success.

“At home in a Friday night game for only the second time at Rex Hardaker Oval against arch rivals Coffs Harbour Comets, a large vocal crowd witnessed a tough and entertaining encounter.

“The lead changed hands many times in a very even contest eventually led by their captain Travys Downton with Sawtell running out winners 24-22.

“Panthers hooker Grady Spokes scored three tries and kicked four goals in a man of the match performance.

“Halfback Zach Stevenson scored an intercept try, his fifth this year before leaving the field with concussion,” said Peter who is the former first grade coach of Sawtell, Nambucca Heads and Orara Valley.

The win puts the Panthers in second place, one point behind minor premiers Macksville who they now play for a grand final spot in the major semi-final.

The Coffs Harbour Comets will play the South Grafton Rebels in the minor semi-final when the season resumes after lockdown.
