SAWTELL Golf Club members have hit the greens wearing pink for a great cause and to honour the memory of a former breast cancer survivor.

Sawtell Golf Club held its Raewyne Leeds Memorial Pink Day to help raise money for Breast Cancer Research.

Raewyne Leeds was a breast cancer survivor for over 20 years who passed away earlier this year.

She helped to organise and sponsored the Annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser Day at Sawtell Golf Club for many years and was adamant the day should be fun and full of camaraderie.

The Raewyne Leeds Memorial Breast Cancer Fundraiser saw 78 of the Sawtell Golf Club ladies members, friends, staff, and even one or two male playing members dress up and play in pink, as pink wigs and tutus featured amongst the sea of pink.

The annual Tee Off for Breast Cancer event was a 4 Person Ambrose Casino Royale format, which raised over $5000 for cancer research through raffles, the club professionals being paid to take the players drives, and various donations.

Lee Stewart has helped to organise the annual event after she herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005.

She shared with News Of The Area the memories of the woman who this year’s event honoured.

“Raewyne was very vivacious and a very happy person,” she said.

“She wanted the event to be a fun day in which we raise money for cancer research.

“One of Raewyne’s things was that she wanted everyone on the day to be included and to receive pins and trophies for participating, that was one of her big things.”

As a cancer survivor herself, Lee found it uplifting to see the Sawtell Golf Club in a sea of pink each year.

“It’s very exhilarating to see it the first time it was done, and it’s very uplifting and makes you feel like you’re not alone,” she said.
