Sawtell Golf Club honour former member

Ben Gray, Bryce Clugston, Cameron Arnold and Terry Rapley take part in the Bob Gately Memorial event at Sawtell Golf Club.

SAWTELL Golf Club have honoured one of its most revered former members.

The club held its annual Bob Gately Memorial event last weekend, which honoured one of its most respected long-term members.

A former friend of Bob’s, Sawtell Golf Club president Keith Rhoades, said the event was one of the most important of the year for the club.

“It’s in its 13th year, and it’s one of the major tournaments we have each year,” he said.

“We had a field today of 150 starters and this year’s event was a stableford where the three best scores count.

“It’s just a good day and it honours a great former member of the club.”

Rhoades shared with Coffs Coast News of the Area the kind of man his long-time friend was.

“Bob was a character, a great mate and fun to be with who enjoyed life,” he said.

“He loved his golf, his family, and his beloved Wests Tigers.

“And he played golf here for many years, over 30 plus years I believe.”

Bob Gately was a life member of Sawtell Golf Club as well as being the Sawtell RSL Club director for 12 years.

He also owned Bob Gately Mechanical Repairs for a number of years in Coffs Harbour.

Bob Gately passed away in 2008.

Sawtell Golf Club’s next major event is the Veterans’ Week of Golf to be held 12-16 July.
