SAIL Port Stephens (4-10 April) is underway and the waters of Port Stephens are proving to deliver a great regatta for the 121 vessels competing in the Commodores Cup.

The big seas and wild weather leading up to the event saw some of the entrants arrive in the Bay later than usual.

Vessels of all sizes racing the dinghy classes are racing in the bay from Wanda Beach at the Sailing Club, with the Commodores Cup fleet racing from a start line at the Nelson Bay Marina Breakwall.

Sail Port Stephens creates great viewing from the shores of the Port and excellent photographic opportunities.

The yachts start at a modest 25 feet in length with the largest yacht in the fleet the 62 foot ‘Premier Cru’, and spectators should also keep their eyes out for some of the local contenders including ‘51st Project’.

Event spokesperson Mark Rothfield told News Of The Area, “We have been lucky this year the marinas have found extra space for us and the regatta is seeing the house full sign up in Port Stephens – this year there is a wait list to participate in the event.”

Rothfield likened the event to a sailors’ version of a golf holiday.

Port Stephens offers great beach access with beautiful white sandy beaches for the dinghy sailing events.

The event is growing and other organisations are joining Sail Port Stephens for their NSW Titles events which adds to the overall appeal of the event for participants and spectators alike.

“It is hard to say who is going to shine in the Commodores Cup, ‘51st Project’ usually does really well but everyone is up against some new boats in the fleet which is bringing a whole new dimension to the event.

“In good conditions if there is a decent breeze you can have some fun.”

Parents can bring their children aged 6-12 years down to Nelson Bay Beach inside the marina on 9 April to try sailing and there will be entertainment and some markets to enjoy.
