“Last month’s Myall River Festival provided an ideal opportunity for Rotary to conduct a fundraiser in favour of the local Police Citizens Youth Club (P.C.Y.C.),” Rotary’s Ian Mckenzie-Smith said.

Tea Gardens Snr. Constable Rob Wylie runs the boxing gym with the aid of local dad Steve Peitch and Phil Wallis who travels from Muswellbrook to help when he can.

20 young boys and girls now enjoy the benefits of a twice weekly workout.

But, as is often the case with a fledgling group, there’s a problem and one that’s not easily solved.

Currently the boxing gym calls the Hawks Nest old dancing academy in Booner Street home.

Ian said, “Unfortunately the premises are being demolished next year for redevelopment and Rob is looking for another venue.”

“The old Scout Hall has been suggested but there seem to be some difficulties there,” Ian added.

“’We are looking for funds to purchase a demountable boxing ring and the $500 that the Rotary Club has donated will be a tremendous help but more will be needed,” Rob Wylie said.

Local tradesmen have been very generous in supplying their labour to help fit out the gym and the Lions Club have presented valuable exercise equipment.

Rotary’s Ian Mackenzie Smith told News Of The Area, “We would like to thank those at the Festival for supporting the fundraising raffle and our Club is very happy to be part of the support for such an important youth program in our community.”

The PCYC Boxing Gym operates Mondays and Wednesdays from 4.30 to 5.30pm at Booner St, Hawks Nest.
