Mumm’s Restaurant in Tea Gardens was the venue, a celebration of community, the theme. “We’ve been going 14 years and we’ve just passed $200,000 put back into the community,” Ian Mackenzie-Smith told News Of The Area. “Not bad for a little club that averages about 22 members,” Ian said. The Myall Rotarians work tirelessly to support the local area and its many not-for profit organisations. Raffles, barbecues and book sales all raise funds to support the Myall Coast community from the Tea Gardens Public School to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Youth Exchange Programs and sporting associations. The list of recipients goes on and on. The ‘Changeover Dinner’ is also the time for announcing the Paul Harris Fellowship recognition. “This is not an award,” Ian said. To become a Paul Harris Fellow, you must have made a considerable contribution to your community. This year there were two recipients, Gordon Grainger and Barry Whiteman. Gordon Grainger was recognised for his tireless efforts with the Myall River Action Group. “I had no idea, I was so surprised when they called out my name,” Gordon said. Barry Whiteman was recognised for his long and devoted association with the RSL both at local and State level. The evening ended with outgoing president Brian Oatley handing over the reigns to Graeme Dunn to lead the way in 2017-18.
