THE local road network throughout southern areas of the Lyne electorate will receive a significant injection of funds over the next four years as part of the Federal Coalition Government’s funding boost to the Roads to Recovery programme.

Local Federal MP Dr David Gillespie today announced that Dungog, Maitland, Port Stephens and MidCoast Councils would share in a further $22,269,281 under the programme between 2019-20 and 2023-24.

Dungog Council will receive $2,299,290, Maitland Council $3,491,030, Port Stephens $3,122,109 and MidCoast Council $13,356,852.

“This funding is in addition to the Bridges Renewal and Road Blackspots grants, as well as this year’s allocation of $34,031,661 shared across the four Councils in Federal Financial Assistance Grants for both roads and other infrastructure,” Dr Gillespie said.

This year Dungog Shire Council secured $2,576,026, Maitland Council $6,998,594, Port Stephens Council $6,644,618 and MidCoast Council $17,812,423.

“These funds will be an important component in the delivery of Council’s roads programme, and I’m delighted our region is sharing in this significant increase in funding for our investment in local road upgrades.”

More than $2 billion in Roads to Recovery funding will be provided to local government bodies from 2019−20 to 2023−24 to deliver further improvements to local road networks around the country.

Dr Gillespie said the Roads to Recovery program was introduced by The Nationals during the Howard Government and had involved close collaboration between the Australian and local governments to deliver the road infrastructure improvements required to support economic growth.

“The funding provides councils with the ability to invest in upgrading local roads, thereby helping to improve safety and efficiency levels for all users of the network and economic growth in their communities,” Dr Gillespie said.

The allocations for each Council have been calculated using the proportion of Financial Assistance Grants that each local governing body receives and updated assessments undertaken by local government grants commissions.

Through the Roads to Recovery Program, the Federal Government supports councils with the ongoing maintenance of Australia’s local road infrastructure, facilitating greater access and improved safety, economic and social outcomes.
