ORGANISERS of this year’s Myall River Festival are busy putting the finishing touches to what they hope will be one of the best ever ‘family fun’ days on the Tea Gardens waterfront on Saturday 13 October.

“There are lots of highlights to this year’s festival, among them the Prawn Eating Competition which we hope will be loads of fun,” Chamber of President Graham Lang said.

It costs just a gold coin donation to have a chance of eating lots of delicious prawns and be in the running from some great prizes, courtesy of Mumm’s on the Myall.

The riverfront entertainment kicks off at 10 am, with school and dance performances on the stage, followed by Sharon from Greenpaws with her ever popular Dog Show at 11am.

“Bring your best mate along, there’s a raft of different prize categories from the Waggliest Tail to the Senior Citizens Award,” Sharon said.

Sharon stressed for all pet owners to be mindful of their animals needs on the night of the Festival with the Fireworks Spectacular due to kick off on the river at around 8pm.

Traffic and parking restrictions also apply throughout the day of the Festival.

There will be road closures from Ogden Street to the Bridge along Marine Drive in Tea Gardens from midnight Friday until late Saturday evening.

No parking will also apply along Marine Drive, Maxwell and Charles Street to allow stall holders traffic access and emergency vehicle access.

“We’re hoping all residents, visitors and tourists can appreciate that this is a very special event for the town and it only happens once a year,” Graham said.

The Port Stephens Ferry service is putting on extra services on Saturday to accommodate for the crowds coming over from the Bay.

With nearly 80 stalls this year, there’s something for everyone’s taste, with lots of different and unusual food stalls, to clothes, jewellery, homewares, candles, wine and exotic spices.

There will be half a dozen water stations scattered throughout the festival grid to cut down on the use of bottled water.
And of course there will be lots for the kids, both big and small, to enjoy from the giant jumping castle and adrenaline rush ride, to the dunking machine, and kayak races for our teenagers.

“This is going to be a great day out, with something for everyone, and a day our townships of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest can be proud of.”
