Current plans are for the toilets to be demolished once the Robinson Reserve upgrade takes place.
Roz Scoles of the South Tomaree Community Association told News Of The Area, “Currently we have 482 signatures on our petition and we are still collecting signatures.”
The South Tomaree Community Association Inc. fully support the Robinson Reserve upgrade.
“The reason we are collecting signatures is because the community feel we need more public toilets not less,” she said.
When the Robinson Reserve upgrade takes place there will be 4 new toilets built.
The Association believes that a majority of the community want to keep the asset used by the 3846 local residents, and constant influx of tourists sees keeping a perfectly good and very used toilet block a good idea.
The toilet block in question services Birubi Point Beach, Iris Moore Reserve, Tomaree National Park Walkway and the visitors to the historic cemetery.
It is believed that the potential for visitation to the well constructed clean brick toilet facility will only increase as the regions tourism grows.
The demolition is in accordance with the adopted Birubi Point Aboriginal Place Master Plan, Birubi Point Aboriginal Place Management Plan and Robinson Reserve Concept Plan.
These documents were part of an extensive comprehensive community consultation prior to adoption by the Council.
These plans were also supported by the Birubi Point Advisory Panel and Registered Aboriginal Parties who hold an interest in the management and protection of the Birubi Point Aboriginal Place.
Retention of the toilet block would see seven toilets and a urinal at the waterfront plus the toilets up near Crest in Anna Bay.
The Association plans to deliver their petition to Council in a bid to save the amenities block and want the community to get behind the effort to save the facilities.
