Founding member, Queen Helen Young, came across the Red Hat Society whilst on holiday and thought it would be wonderful to create something locally.

The Red Hat Society Inc, describes it as ‘a playgroup for women, created to connect like-minded women, make new friends and enrich lives through the power of fun and friendship’.

Creating much attention from onlookers, the ladies gather monthly, proudly displaying their red hats and purple outfits.

Tracy Sammut said, “We build lovely friendships and the fact we no long fundraise is a blessing, no pressure to make cakes and so on, we’ve all done it and it’s time now to relax and enjoy.”

To earn the right to wear a red hat and purple outfit you must be over 50.

Under 50 you can wear a pink hat and lavender outfit.

When the group first started out, they would buy their hats from Vinnies and paint and decorate them, “It’s part of the fun,” said Helen.

The ladies travel to meet other groups both locally and further afield, they are limitless in their opportunities and zest for fun and adventure.

With ages ranging from 59 to 90, Helen said, “We pride ourselves on getting old disgracefully.”

Part of the reason the Red Hats are so popular is because they welcome new women to the area, where they can have an immediate group of ladies they can rely on for fun, frivolity, food, friendship and flexible friends.

The ladies are keen to meet other ladies who would like to enjoy a day of getting dressed up and having fun.
