For some of these athletes, this would be their first taste of competition at such a high level against athletes from all over the state. With the Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre athletes putting in their best performances for the season, numerous personal best results were achieved. At the end of the Championships, the Centre proudly came away with three hard-earned medals. Under 12 competitor Keira McGregor became the Under 12 long jump State Champion with a jump of 5.17m earning her the coveted gold medal. Keira almost came home with another medal, narrowly missing bronze in the triple jump event finishing a more than credible 4th. The athletics all rounder also managed to make the final in two sprinting events finishing 7th in the 100m and 8th in the 200m. An amazing effort in anyone’s language. Another proud medallist was Under 13 representative Ebony Newton. Ebony won the silver medal in the 200m hurdles with an impressive time of 28.22 seconds. Ebony was also unlucky not to return home with a second medal after finishing a very respectable 4th in the 100m. The track star also made the final in the 80m hurdles, finishing a gutsy 6th. However, history was made by Under 15 representative Jack Kenny. Jack will forever have the privilege of becoming Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre’s first Little Athletics State Javelin medallist winning silver with a distance of 48.10m. All in all, Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre’s 2017 / 2018 athletics season will be remembered as a very successful one, with the three medallists hopefully growing in number in the 2018 / 2019 season.
