But that same explosion of tourists worked perfectly for the Myall Arts and Craft Centre staging its first Quilts by the Myall Show in four years.

All three rooms of the craft centre’s work areas were transformed with 60 quilts and handmade Christmas decorations for the three-day exhibition and sale.

There were quilts so large they had to be hung from the rafters, to small delicate creations made especially for the birthing unit at John Hunter Hospital.

“People came from all over, with some travelling from Sydney just to view the quilts,” Janette Coppock told News Of The Area.

“Many commented that the workmanship was outstanding, and a better show than in Sydney.”

Many of the quilts had taken months and in some cases years to complete.

“Once you start a quilt you usually work on them at home because they need to be sewn on the same machine,” Susan Burns, President of the MCACC said.

Susan made it sound easy, “Most of it is just straight sewing and applique.”

But quilts such as Trish Grainger’s took three years to make and it was all hand done.

Craft Centre’s Ali Mills’ transparent quilt, which gave off a stained-glass effect, happened quite by accident, “I did not intend this effect but now that I see it against the light, I’m going to take it home and hang it in my window.”

By the end of the three-day exhibition, hundreds of locals and tourists had walked through the door to admire the quilting group’s handiwork.

‘Most of the money raised will go back into buying another sewing machine and a quilting machine,” Sue said.

The Myall Art and Craft Centre is now looking towards Christmas with their handmade decorations now on sale in their shop.
