Coinciding with the celebrations was the annual Queen of the Mountain competition with 60 bowlers keen to take home the crown.

Twenty teams from Karuah, Tuncurry Beach, Tuncurry Forster Sporties, Taree West, Taree Railway, Taree Leagues, Gloucester, Wingham, Black Head, Old Bar and Harrington all travelled to the foot of craggy Mount Alum to take part in the tournament.

President of the Bulahdelah Women’s Bowling Club, Mary-Anne Hutley told News Of The Area,

“Controlling Body Penny Bonner (Hon Sec), scorekeeper Rod Landsdowne and umpire Ken Southern were on hand to ensure the smooth running of play.”

The first game of 15 ends, three-bowl triples kicked off at 9.30am with all players in high hopes that the forecast rain would stay at bay to allow both games to be completed.

But the Rain Gods were having none of that with a severe storm hitting during the lunch break and after a considerable wait it was deemed too dangerous to play on into the afternoon.

“The Queen of the Mountain Title and tiara travelled south to Karuah team with a margin of 16 to the team of Judy Green (lead), Marian Lilley (second) and Helen Priest (skip).”

Mary-Anne said, “They were closely followed by two teams with a margin of 15 and after a countback by Match Secretary Beatrice Weekes and scorekeeper Rod Lansdowne second place was awarded to the Beresfield team of Gladys Dunning (lead), Narelle Bunt (second) and Pam Martin (skip) with third place going to the Wingham team of Jo Duncan (lead), Lillian Cross (second) and Laurelle Dennes (skip).”
