Mayor of Port Stephens, Bruce MacKenzie has today delivered $19,000 to local community organisations to help them continue their good work for the benefit of Port Stephens residents.

Mens shed groups, Lions clubs, schools and the Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network are among the recipients of Mayoral funds ranging from $500 to $8,000 for the Karuah Mens Shed.

Mayor MacKenzie said the funds would be put to use for projects that would deliver vital services to the community.

“There are so many organisations in Port Stephens that are working for no other purpose than to benefit the people in our community,” he said.

“In the majority of cases, they are volunteers working with scant resources.

“These funds are just a small contribution to allow them to build on the work they are already doing, to provide them with a little bit of encouragement to keep going, and most of all to say thank you for all that they do.”

Mayor MacKenzie said he had seen first hand how deserving these organisations were.

“These are community groups that are working for the benefit of a range of people, including children, older men and people who may be at risk of suicide,” he said.

“There is no underestimating the significance of the work they do, and the difference they make to our community.

“It gives me a great deal of the pleasure that Port Stephens Council makes these funds available to be able to support these organisations in this way.”
