Storing outdoor furniture, securing trampolines and unplugging electrical equipment connected to mains power can also help minimise damage. Bulahdelah Volunteer Rescue Association Commander Peter Mostyn said having an emergency plan is essential. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s storm season or fire season, people need to have a safety plan in place,” he said. “It needs to include a way of escaping danger, especially if near a flood area.” Mr Mostyn told News Of The Area power outages during storm season are common. “People can be without power for some time,” he said. “They should ensure they have an emergency kit with non-perishable food, drinking water, a flashlight with spare batteries, first aid kit and a list of emergency numbers.” The 2015 Superstorm and 2014 ANZAC Day hailstorm are a reminder of the destructive impact of extreme weather conditions. Mr Mostyn said a little preparation now can mean a big difference during a storm.
