VALUES, respect and responsibility are being rewarded on a whole of school basis at Tomaree High School under a new rewards program.

VIVO is a points-based program where students can earn points based on their adherence to the school’s set values.

Deputy principal at Tomaree High School, Glenn Sproule, told News Of The Area, “VIVO is a whole of school recognition system which will enable teachers to reward and recognise students when they behave how and when we want them to.”

The values that the school has set focus on polite conversation, and creating a safe school environment and these values are taught across the school on a weekly basis.

When students meet expectations they are rewarded VIVO points which they can exchange for goods in an online shop.
From key rings, to iPads, VIVO currency is there for students to spend.

There are also in house VIVO rewards like dollars off formal tickets and even having morning tea with a deputy principal.
Each staff member has a VIVO budget to spend.

VIVO points offer a powerful incentive to students as they can see which teacher rewarded them and why, it’s great for students to see a positive comment from a teacher that recognises them.

The program captures the ‘middle of the road’ students, not those who are academically outstanding, but those who are positive members of the school community.

Glenn Sproule said, “It’s rewarding the ordinary often.”

Student Zac Bonser already has 64 VIVO points and is aiming for 500 points by the end of term.

Fellow student Sophie Trevern said, “I have around 120 points and I feel proud of what I have achieved.”

“I have 80 points now and want 199 points to buy a splat egg, because it looks fun,” Caiya Workman said.

Ethan Martin has accumulated 40 VIVO points and is thinking about some headphones from the online store.

The students have calculated the points needed to gain an iPad through VIVO points and it may be similar to the rewards we all hope for through airline programs, so near and yet so far.
