As usual, students were recognised across the nine participating schools for exemplary actions in school or for their school community.

Ms Kath Henry, a teacher and currently relieving Principal at Karuah Public School presented the awards to the deserving students.

Speaking to MarketPlace, Ms Henry, who has been at Karuah Public School for 23 years, said, “Teaching is fantastic, as it is rewarding to see students improve academically, socially and to connect with students to make the world a better place.”

“Education empowers minds and leads to making good thoughts and clever ideas. Education also is the only treasure that cannot be taken away from you.”

“It has assisted the community members to become involved in looking for positive behaviour in the community rather than focusing on the negative.”

“As a school community, we feel a high level of satisfaction when we ring a parent to tell them about their child receiving a Community PBL award.”

This week’s award recipients were:

Matthew Hughes, Hunter River High: Nominated for his display of sportsmanship during the 2019 Nations of Origin Rugby League competition.

Hayley Maslen, Grahamstown Public School: For demonstrating great leadership skills during Plant A Tree Day activities.

Isabelle Lewis, Karuah Public School: For cutting off her beautiful long hair and donating it for cancer. Isabelle is not only a generous community member, she is always displaying respect, responsibility and pride everywhere she goes.

Marley Lucas, Raymond Terrace Public School: For acting responsibly remaining safe and showing respect when representing the school at the Hunter Dance Festival.

Lilly Vella, Seaham Public School: Lilly is an outstanding athlete who displays exceptional sportsmanship. She recently competed at the State cross country. After the race Lilly was seen to be congratulating other athletes, shaking hands with those around her.

King Phetklang, Irrawang High School: Nominated by a community member for coming to the immediate assistance of a gentleman who has a serious fall.

Ella Metcalf, Medowie Public School: Nominated by a community member for assisting their friend who fell and hurt themselves during dance lessons at the community hall.

Kobey Raisbeck-Pollard, Irrawang Public School: For volunteering to play on another Under 8’s soccer team after playing his own game. Showing great sportsmanship.

Maddison Mitchell, Salt Ash Public School: For being a great helper for the younger students at the Hunter Dance Festival.
