THURSDAY night saw a turn out of 400 beautiful women to Nelson Bay Cinemas for the second major fundraising event this year.

Bridget Jones’s Baby was definitely a huge draw card with the three cinemas packed full of smiling faces in support of this great cause.

“It’s a real social function and a great opportunity for the people of the Bay Area to support this great organisation,” Neil Merrin, owner of Nelson Bay Cinema, told News Of The Area.

“We had all three cinemas filled to capacity, all running the movie at the same time,” Mr Merrin said.

Port Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group is a Not for Profit support group run by local volunteers to offer support and assistance to women with any form of cancer, and their partners, through every stage of their journey.

“Tonight is dedicated to Sarah Litten whom we lost recently,” Kylie Baker, Treasurer of Port Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group told News Of The Area.

“Sarah was a founding member of our support group and she is greatly loved and missed,” Kylie said.

“I have recently seen two beautiful friends lose their battle with cancer, Tui Campbell and Sarah Litten will never be forgotten,” Ms Baker added.

Services through the organisations include: transport to treatment in Newcastle, monthly morning teas, house cleaning, lawn mowing, dog walking, child care, wellness days, and other support mechanisms.

Monthly morning teas are held at Baroque Coffee House and provide the opportunity for a casual catch up and a way of meeting new friends.

The organisation also offer Wellness Days for members held at Thou Walla Sunset Retreat at Soldiers Point – activities include guest speakers and therapists, provide information, promote healthy lifestyles, maintain a library of wellness books and DVD’s provide wigs, hats and scarfs.

With the help of Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group the organisation provides transport for patients to and from treatments.

With the support of the Cancer Council we provide assistance with house cleaning, lawn mowing, dog walking and child care.

The aim for the future is the hope to establish a Wellness Centre in Port Stephens in order to help patients, their families and carers access support and information from trained staff and volunteers

Another goal is to provide access to complementary treatments, access to nutritional advice as well as access to legal and financial support.
