PORT Stephens was well represented in the 2019 Billabong Oz Grom Cup with some great achievements from Mike Clayton-Brown in the Under 16’s and Dane Henry in the Under 14’s.

Most states were represented in the event, with surfers coming from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and WA.

The event was held at Park Beach in Coffs Harbour where surfers were presented with some difficult conditions.

Competitors in the Billabong Oz Grom Cup put on their best small wave performances in an effort to cement their spot into the final rounds of competition.

Ethan Smith of Surfing NSW told News Of The Area, “Port Stephen’s Grom, Mike Clayton-Brown showed why he was the reigning Under-16 NSW champion tearing apart his round three heat in the 16 Boys however, he came runner up in the final.”

Clayton-Brown performed an array of giant forehand snaps and carves in the bumpy one-foot surf to post a giant 18.00 two-wave total.

As a result, Clayton-Brown left his fellow competitors chasing two-wave combinations to take away his lead.

Clayton-Brown was challenged by Rino Lindsay of Lennox Head, and Jahli Brooks of Currumbin, Qld in the fourth round.

Dane Henry of Fingal Bay went up against Ty Richardson of Palm Beach, in Queensland making their intentions clear in the 14-and-Under Boys division with both surfers lighting up the tiny conditions.

Both surfers lit up their heats with a healthy mix of power and style as Dane Henry notched up 17.17 in his heat.

The finals saw more interesting action by Clayton-Brown as he flew the flag for Port Stephens, however he was beaten out by Currumbin’s Jackson Graham finishing in second place.
