PORT Stephens residents get their long overdue chance to vote for representation at council elections, which will be held on Saturday, 9 September 2017.

People who have turned 18 need to enrol to vote before 31 July, 2017.

If you live in Port Stephens and are enrolled on the Commonwealth and State electoral roll, you will automatically be included on the roll for this local government election.

Those who have moved to Port Stephens since the 2012 election will need to update their enrolment to vote in the election.

The dust has settled after the NSW Government’s attempt to force a merger between Port Stephens and Newcastle City which has seen the elections delayed for the region.

It is expected that the position for Mayor will be hotly contended in 2017.

Kate Washington Member for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “As a result of the State government’s council amalgamation debacle, our right to vote for our Council representatives has frustratingly been delayed 12 months. We can’t waste this opportunity to see positive change for Port Stephens.”

“The people of Port Stephens deserve a council that is transparent, engaged and honest, I urge everyone to think carefully about who they vote for.”

Kate also expressed how important it is for young people to be enrolled to vote so they can have a say as it is their futures which will be impacted by decisions made by governments today.
