PORT Stephens parks and skateparks have officially reopened after last week’s decision by the Council to close under Police orders allegedly due to breaches of the COVID-19 Public Health Orders.

At the same time that these areas were closed, outdoor gyms and equipment were left open and were able to be used by members of the community.

Councillor Giacomo Arnott expressed frustration at this decision advocating for the younger people of Port Stephens who need access to these areas for exercise.

“It’s important that local children are able to exercise during this lockdown, with their usual access to school playgrounds cut off.

“This is a simple solution to a simple problem.

“It’s not fair to have skate parks and playgrounds barricaded up, but allow outdoor gyms to remain open.

“That made no sense, but this outcome strikes the right balance,” Councillor Arnott told News of The Area.

Port Stephens Council have listened to this feedback and have reopened playgrounds, parks and skateparks in the area from 27 August for COVID-safe usage.

Visitors will be required to use a QR code to check in and out of the playground, wearing masks is mandatory for anyone over the age of twelve and social distancing is encouraged.

“While playgrounds and skateparks in south-west Sydney remain open, there’s no reason for us up here to stop our young people from accessing recreation so long as the health orders allow for it.

“I don’t want there to be any reason to close these facilities again.

“Follow the rules and not only will they be kept open, but we will also be protecting ourselves and our local community,” Councillor Arnott said.
