The number of students opting for a P-TECH pathway have doubled since the introduction of the innovative program, ensuring future generations of young Australians have the skills to equip them for the 21st century workforce. Principal of Hunter River High School, Ms Deb Dibley said, “P-TECH partnerships between Hunter River High School and industry are providing opportunities for our students to engage with the workplace of today, and better understand the relevance of classroom learning to jobs and post-school pathways.” On Thursday 7 December, after the 12 month pilot program, Hunter River High officially launched their P-TECH program. Hunter River High School students, staff, parents, and industry celebrated the collaborative journey of P-TECH. “Today is a celebration of achievements with our students and the strong collaboration we have built with our key industry partners.” “This pilot has proven to have long term benefits for everyone involved,” said Industry Liaison Officer Liana Nadalin. P-TECH students have the opportunity to pursue formal STEM training as part of a nationally recognised VET qualification, while also undertaking their Higher School Certificate. BAE Systems Australia, Jetstar Airways, Ampcontrol Group, RDA Hunter, and Varley Group are among the local employers involved in the Port Stephens P-TECH Partnership. The University of Newcastle is the tertiary education partner involved in supporting pathways to post-school education. In his address to the ceremony year 11 student Kodi Rowbottom said, “From the moment I walked into the hanger I set a goal that I would do everything in my power to work in the aerospace industry.” “P-TECH has given me that opportunity.“ In her address to the many gathered, Ms Nadalin also acknowledged the significant role the students’ parents play in ensuring the success of P-TECH.
