The Zone Championships are conducted in each of the 24 zones throughout the state. Children progress to the Regional Championships from Zone and then to State. There are 11 Clubs in the Hunter zone ranging from Adamstown to the Myall Coast. Port Stephens Little Athletics sent 21 athletes to the Zone Championships, with these athletes competing in 66 events. The club returned home with a phenomenal 44 awards consisting of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Out of the 21 competitors, only two are in the U7 age group and are the only ones who will not progress to the Regional Competition. The Regionals will take place on February 11 and 12, 2017 at the Glendale Sports Complex. Eighteen athletes from Port Stephens are automatic qualifiers, having placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their events. The club is still waiting on the results of the rest of the region to find out if the last athlete will progress with the next best performance. Some standout performances include Tobi Olatunde in the U7 age group who placed 1st in each of the four events he entered including discus. Tobi threw a record breaking throw of 18.69m. Leah Dove was another stand out in the U17, when she placed 1st in both her 800m and 1500m race. Tichaona Chigweremba had amazing results in the age group of U15B when he was placed first in all three of his events and Lily Mullane broke both the discus (33.19m) and shot put (10.04m) records for her age group in the U10s. “I honestly could not be more proud of the kids who participated,” Trudie Carberry, the club’s secretary, told Bay News Of The Area. “The sportsmanship and team spirit was just amazing and watching them cheer each other on, patting each other on the back after a race was such a beautiful sight,” Ms Carberry added.
