Due to the COVID 19 lockdown, it has been five months since Port Stephens Legacy Group (PSLG) has been able to meet in person. Fortunately, this week, Legatees were able to hold their monthly July meeting at Wests Diggers Nelson Bay, returning to ‘business as usual’. PSLG Chairman Doug Jacka told News Of The Area, “The work of Legacy continued even during the lockdown.” “While we were not able to personally visit our 200 widows, Legatees were committed to making telephones calls and following up on any needs their charges might have which could not be dealt with by their families.” Legacy Port Stephens Group has been heavily involved for more than 30 years supporting the widows and children of departed defence force personnel. “Nowadays, with more recent conflicts occurring such as East Timor, Afghanistan, Iraq and others, we are seeing younger beneficiaries with children becoming more dependent on our help” said Mr Jacka. The PSLG’s new committee was voted in at the AGM with the Executive Committee comprising of Chairman, Doug Jacka; Vice Chairman, Carol Selkirk; Vice Chairman, Peter Polack; Secretary, Diana Fuda; and Treasurer, Murray Forrest. Port Stephens Legacy is always looking for people to volunteer to become Legatees and help our local widows. “This is not an onerous role and it can be very fulfilling,” said Mr Jacka. “Our region covers all of Port Stephens including the various bay areas plus Lemon Tree Passage, Tanilba and Medowie. If you are interested in becoming a Legatee, please contact our Secretary Diana Fuda on 0428 744 408. By Marian SAMPSON
