PORT Stephens Council are introducing three scholarships for women, aged over 16, of $1000 each as a part of Port Stephen’s International Women’s Day celebrations.

The scholarships are designed to assist women in areas such as education, sport and culture with a link back to benefiting the community of Port Stephens.

Port Stephens Councillor Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “These scholarships would not have been possible without the efforts of past councillor Sally Dover who has always been a champion of women.”

The scholarships can be used by Port Stephens women to cover some of the out of pocket expenses that they may face in reaching their career goals.

Belinda Johnson of Anna Bay Micro Greens is one Port Stephens woman who is planning to apply for the scholarship, “If successful with the application I would use the money to build my website which would educate people about the health benefits of microgreens,” she said.

Her business currently supplies restaurants and cafes around the Port Stephens area and she also donates product to the Dara Van which is providing meals to the homeless in Port Stephens.

Councillor Sarah Smith said, “I’d like to encourage women and girls to follow their dreams and get out there, and make whatever you care about your career.”

“These scholarships are one way that Council is helping women to realise their dreams,” she said.

Darcy Geale, President of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, says Rotary is proud to be part of the joint initiative with Council.
