Or media@newsofthearea.com.au Or CLICK FOR ADVERT QUOTE In October 2016 the woodworkers wrote to the Board of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre requesting an expansion to their workshop due to the growing numbers (80) woodworkers finding it hard to be creative in the limited space available. In December 2017 the centre received a grant of $40,000 from Community Building Partnerships which covered half of the estimated cost. Meryl Swanson MP provided a number of matched grants to the woodworking group for equipment and the fitting out of the new woodworking shed. Port Stephens Council also contributed funds to see the project finalised. Work began in August 2018. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “The project took much longer than anticipated. “The woodworkers demonstrated their skills by making all the workbenches, cupboards and installing a very impressive dust extraction system,” she said. The expanded shed provides a great facility for the community and members giving them space to work as well as socialise safely. The new expanded facility will also be enjoyed by school students undertaking program using the venue. To make the dream a reality Plant Concrete & Construction teamed up with locals Sorensen’s Design who prepared the environmental impact document and provided practical guidance in the early stages of the project. Port Stephens Council also contributed funds to see the project finalised. Meryl Swanson and Kate Washington officially opened the new extension.
