This exhibition which combines art with nature will coincide with a major exhibition at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra.

Bonsai is an ancient Japanese art that takes patience and dedication.

The Chinese also have a version of the art form which is known as penzai, but the best recognised term for these tiny trees is bonsai.

Trees are planted in small containers and shaped to mimic the shapes of fully grown plants.

Sometime those practising bonsai also create miniature landscapes under the trees that they have lovingly shaped.

Bonsai uses copper wire and pruning to train the plant to the desired shape.

Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “For many years bonsai artists around Australia have been using native plants to create wonderful examples of miniature trees.

“There has been an increasing interest in using native plant material and our natural environment has inspired a new approach, to try to incorporate a more Australian style, to emulate how these trees appear in the bush,” she said.

The display at the Art Centre will include many native species including several types of figs, banksia and bottlebrush.

All trees will be for sale and proceeds support the centre.
