SHOWCASING the talent of some of Port Stephens’ youngest AFL players was the Port Stephens Power Auskick team on Saturday, 22 July.
Playing at the Sydney Swans versus St Kilda’s Saints game, the 11 children playing did so with pride and skills.
Speaking with the coach prior to the game, Mr Darren McKimm said, “The Auskick team will play as the half-time entertainment.”
“Teams are allocated tickets each year and are invited to play once per season.”
“Clubs apply to be part of the game.”
“The children on the team have been training hard all year and are really looking forward to showing their talents to a big crowd.”
Club President, Ms Mel Nelson, said of the night, “All the kids enjoyed themselves.”
“Under lights and in the big smoke, Sydney, our little Auskickers ran out onto the SCG during half time at the Swans versus St Kilda Pride Round.”
“With smiles on their faces and boots on their feet they were ready to take on the big league.”
One parent added, “This can be a once in a lifetime opportunity for some kids to run out onto the SCG and play a game of footy and I know every kid that gets this opportunity is overflowing with joy and super excited.”
“My little man woke up on Saturday morning with the statement, ‘I’m playing with Buddy Franklin today, hey Mum’.”
“I want to thank the NAB AFL Auskick for this amazing opportunity for our little footballers, it truly is something they never forget.”
A member of the Port Stephens Power, five-year-old Dane McKimm was excited to play, telling News Of The Area, “I get to play in the SCG.”
“I get to be with my team.”
“I am a little bit nervous and happy.”
“I like kicking the ball and my friends and I can mark.”
Auskick is an AFL junior program run for girls and boys from five years old.
