Port Stephens athletes gear up for regional championships in Maitland National News Port Stephens Sport Property/Sports/Opinion - popup ad Sport by News Of The Area - Modern Media - January 2, 2025 Outstanding 12-year-old Port Stephens club athlete Brynne Dagwell bagged two gold medals plus a silver and bronze at the recent Port Hunter Zone Athletics Championships in Wallsend. FRESH from their medal winning feats at this year’s Port Hunter Zone Athletics Championships a core of aspiring juniors from the Port Stephens Athletics Club are on track for more success at the upcoming regional titles. Leading the way is talented javelin throwing prospect Brynne Dagwell – one of the best young field athletes in the Hunter region. Twelve-year-old Dagwell claimed two gold medals in the javelin and triple jump events at the recent Port Hunter Zone Little Athletics Championships at Federal Park in Wallsend to underline her potential. Competing in the Girls 12yrs division, the promising all rounder registered a personal best performance in the triple jump and collected a silver medal in the shot put plus a bronze medal in long jump to cap a memorable meet. Just as impressive were her Port Stephens club colleagues in twelve-year-old triple jump ace Shanique Robertson and triple jump and discus silver medallist Jamie Taylor-Anderson. The gifted Robertson picked up a bronze medal in the Girls 13yrs high jump and was part of the Senior Girls 4 x 100m Relay team that brought home a silver medal along with Naomi Rengkatchaya, Mia McDonald and Anna Taylor-Anderson. All three have produced encouraging displays in both track and field under the guidance of Head Coach Bob Walkley and Field coach Steve Denning. They will spearhead a 34-strong Port Stephens club contingent that have qualified for a total of 92 events at the Hunter Regional Athletic Championships to be staged in Maitland on 6-7 February. “The Port Stephens club has a crop of exciting young athletes stepping up and producing top performances across many disciplines on a consistent basis,” quipped the experienced Walkley. “We have a good training system at the Tomaree Sports Complex with many of the athletes reaping the rewards of their hard work and achieving success through self belief and natural athleticism,” Bob added.
