FROM dedicated world class riders to the weekend warrior, the Port to Port Mountain Bike Ride is is an annual event building momentum each year.

Fifteen countries and out of region riders represent 70 percent of this year’s Port to Port Mountain Bike Ride.

The event is broadcast to 132 countries and watched by 500 million viewers across the globe.

On the weekend, just over 500 riders took part in the shortest stretch with an anticipated 700 over the coming days.

Chris Heverin, Event Director, told News Of The Area, “We love coming to Port Stephens, it’s a majestic holiday destination, and it means we bring tourism to a beautiful location and enjoy all of the tourist attractions available.”

“Being an international event, we attract riders of all levels, and from across the globe, this year we have 15 countries represented.”

The youngest, unofficial participant was four-year-old Bryce Smith who said, “It was great to watch, I have a bigger bike at home with pedals and I’m learning to use them.”

Garry Phillips, volunteer with Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS), was in charge of ‘bag drop’ where riders could leave their valuables under the watchful eye of Garry, who said, “Volunteering with WRHS, along with all of the other volunteers helps towards ensuring it will remain a free service for whoever needs it; I also get to meet people I wouldn’t otherwise meet and attend events such as this.”

Last year, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called on twice during the race.

The winner for the day in the men’s section, Brendan Johnston, said, “It’s a tough track, sand was challenging, which made it difficult to maintain the momentum, however, it feels good to finish first, I’m ready for tomorrow.”

Coming first in the ladies’ category was Em Viotto, who said, “This is the second time I have competed here, which has given me tips for this year, it’s a special moment coming first in the lady’s section.”
