LETTERS keep flying back and forth between our local politicians and community groups to get some action in regards to dredging the ‘The Gut’, but so far with little success.

The Myall River at Tea Gardens hasn’t been dredged since 1961.

But, as is often the case, red tape and responsibility for the cost of the dredge is being batted back and forth between government departments and MidCoast Council.

Community groups such as the Myall River Action group are keeping up the pressure.

Crown Lands collects the mooring fees from boat owners in the area, but has denied responsibility for dredging the area, putting the onus back on MidCoast Council.

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington has written to the State Minister for Lands and Forestry Paul Toole.

“It is common sense that boat owners who pay a mooring fee should be capable of using the waterways where their boats are moored,” Ms Washington said in her letter to the Minister.

“However, given the build up of sand in ‘The Gut’ boat owners are struggling to reach their moorings and face the very real possibility of suffering damage to their vessels if they do.”

“In the event that this occurs, there is a high likelihood of harm to the environment due to fuel leaks.”

Ms Washington has called for a meeting with the Roads and Maritime Services, Crown Lands, boat owners and herself at the earliest opportunity.

“This is not a situation that can be resolved by inaction, indecision and buck passing, between different authorities,” Ms Washington said.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has also committed to writing to the State Minister for Lands, Paul Toole.
