The Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group was founded in 2001 by Nola Lawler who was assisted by a small group of hard-working ladies.

Currently with a membership of around 90 volunteers, they assist with driving patients to Newcastle and surrounding areas for radiation, chemotherapy or medical appointments.

Members also attend sewing bees to make underarm/comfort cushions for mastectomy patients and help out with fundraising.

More areas of support include housekeeping following a mastectomy, lawn mowing, supply of wigs, surgical sleeves (all paid for by the group) and face-to-face support.

Each situation is assessed by the Committee.

The group is independent, receives no Government assistance and is funded entirely by donations from the community.

All funds raised go to residents of the Tomaree Peninsula diagnosed with breast cancer.

Past patients are also cared for if they need ongoing support, some have been with the group for over 10 years.

Last week 40 members attended the group’s Christmas dinner at Tails Restaurant, Nelson Bay Bowling Club, a great opportunity for members to relax and catch up with each other after a busy year with the group assisting 70 breast cancer patients.

Sunday December 11 will see the group ‘manning’ the barbecue at the Tomaree Tri Club’s annual Dave Swan’s Memorial event.

“Annual breakfasts, like the one pictured, are our group’s main fundraiser, it’s become our bread and butter,” Bev Apps, Publicity Officer, told Bay News Of The Area.

“The generosity of local businesses and the community is overwhelming at these events,” Ms Apps said.

The group will be very active over this busy festive season and into the new year period supporting Tomaree Peninsula residents.
