The ‘Yummies 4 Mummies’ group started nearly a decade ago, as an initiative of the St Stephens Catholic Church in Tea Gardens.

Its aim was to provide support for young mothers in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area and its still going strong.

“We saw a need to provide networking and social connections for our young families,” Rhonda Bobako, said.

In a practical sense, Yummies 4 Mummies, gives young mothers of pre-school children a chance to get together every second Wednesday through school term, for a chat, a cuppa, and do it all child free.

While they’re catching up with other mums, their children are looked after by the older women of the community.

“It gives us a chance to enjoy the little ones and remember what it was like, it’s great for someone like me as I don’t have grandchildren yet”, Co-Ordinator Jan Coomer said.

“We have 18 families on our books and 25 children,” she said.

For Marissa McKeough, mum of 1 year old Ruby,”It’s just been the best thing, I just don’t feel like I’m alone and I get a break.”

Members of the ‘Pearls’ also help out with child minding and entertaining the kiddies, all in a safe nurturing environment.

The ‘Pearls’ are the group behind the ‘By My Wardrobe’ at the Myall River Festival and also raise money for local charities and worthwhile causes.

Last Wednesday, they were only too happy to contribute $200 to the Yummies 4 Mummies to buy some new toys or equipment for the youngsters.

“The Pearls of Port Stephens believes that Yummies 4 Mummies is a very valuable part of the community.”
