OPINION: Overtime tax on essential workers

DEAR News Of The area,

MY son is a critical care paramedic in Queensland.

Due to the additional numbers of Covid cases in patients and workers at the moment they are facing extreme loads and shortages in healthcare staff.

Because of this there are multiple requests to work overtime shifts, however the added income tax incurred means most of any extra income ends up being paid to the ATO.

I agree with the principle of higher tax based on income however there needs to be recognition of the current circumstances where healthcare workers are trying to keep the services from collapsing.

The current taxation discourages this.

Regards,
Peter LEWIS,
Coffs Harbour.
