Fire and Rescue Open Day at Tea Gardens was a roaring success.

A steady flow of people attended the Open Day at Tea Gardens Fire and Rescue Station on Saturday 30 May.

Captain Jim Weismantel said, “It was great to see the interest with many people seeking advice on fire prevention and home safety.”

“Many families attended with the kids loving being able to get up close with our trucks and equipment.”

Part of the day involved demonstrations of how firefighting and rescue equipment is used at various emergencies.

A motor vehicle was cut up showing how vehicles are entered at the scene of major accidents in order to show the extrication of trapped persons.

The crew demonstrated everything from breaking windows to the actual use of the hydraulic cutters and the ‘jaws of life’ giving a unique insight into the work of Fire and Rescue.

“Apart from our core business of Fire, HAZMAT, Vertical Rescue and MVA Extrication, we also provide safety training to groups including schools and aged care facilities,” Captain Weismantel said.

There is also a program named SABRE which provides for the elderly and disabled whereby the Fire and Rescue unit will install smoke detectors (battery type only) and batteries free of charge.

If the detectors or batteries are purchased by the elderly or disabled persons, they simply contact the station and arrangements can be made to keep their fire safety equipment up to date.

All in all a great day was had by all and the sausage sandwiches hit the spot with visitors.
