Or media@newsofthearea.com.au[/caption] Or CLICK FOR ADVERT QUOTE Namesake and former NSW Governor and Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair, Federal MP for Lyne Dr David Gillespie and RSL dignitaries were among the large crowd who attended the ceremony in Hawks Nest. Mr Sinclair reminisced about the humble beginnings of the nursing home and the involvement of the local RSL sub branch. “Even with a little government help, a 10 bed hostel was all we could afford and I had the honour of opening it 25 years ago,” Mr Sinclair told the gathering. Back in 1992 a dedicated group of volunteers kept the facility going. In 2007 another 14 beds were added. RSL Life Care came on board and another 17 beds were built in 2012. After a year of construction the new wing now brings the number of beds to 64 with new lounge and dining rooms. The ceremony was also a chance to acknowledge the Gardens’ oldest resident, Dr Allan Stewart, and present him with his Order of Australia Medal which he received back in January. “Alan, who is a 102 years young, believes that as long as you are learning you are not old, so when you leave here everyone go and pick up a book and start learning,” Mr Sinclair said. The RSL’s 93-year-./old Ted Mowbray told the gathering, “The theme of this dedication is respect, to provide care and well being for our aged residents.” “We cherish our past, present and future residents, our staff, past and present and our volunteers,” he said. The new wing cost $6 million to build and has brought new jobs to the area. “It’s a great social infrastructure as well as providing local employment,” Dr Gillespie told News Of The Area. “Reebok retirees eventually all need help and support and it’s great that this local community now has somewhere for them to go.” By Margie TIERNEY OAM AWARDED: Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair, Dr Allan Stewart and Dr David Gillespie MP.
