MAYOR Rhonda Hoban OAM, as Chairperson of Nambucca Valley Council’s National Celebration Day Committee, has declared nominations have opened for Council’s National Celebration Day Awards.

The winners will be presented at a ceremony on the evening of 25 January 2022.

Residents are invited to nominate persons considered worthy of recognition in terms of achievement and effort, particularly in regard to 2021.

For Mayor Hoban, her favourite part of the day is watching presentations to those quiet, humble and unassuming people who never get recognition and don’t seek it.

“We’re often aware of those who excel in particular fields or make an enormous volunteer contribution to our community but there are many wonderful people who quietly give of their time and effort for others,” Mayor Hoban told News Of The Area.

“These are the people who refuse payment, gifts or compliments and say ‘I’m just doing my little bit’.

“The last couple of years have been a trying time for many in our community.

“Whether it’s a family who has lost everything or a person who is feeling alone and isolated by COVID they all tell me the same thing.

“That it is the compassion, support and kindness of others, often strangers, that makes the difference.

“When ‘thankyou’ doesn’t seem enough, the Australia Day Community Service and Good Neighbour awards are an opportunity to acknowledge those people.

“They’re the glue that holds us together as a community.”

Nomination forms providing criteria for each section are available from Nambucca Heads and Macksville Libraries, Council’s Administration Centre at 44 Princess Street, Macksville and Council’s website at www.nambucca@nsw.gov.au.

The closing date for nominations is 4.00 pm on Friday 10 December 2021 and nominations should be completed online on Council’s website, sent to Council’s General Manager, Nambucca Valley Council PO Box 177 Macksville 2447 or emailed to council@nambucca.nsw.gov.au.

Mayor Hoban pointed out that Australia Day is a great opportunity for the community to recognise and honour residents and sportspersons of all ages who have achieved success in their endeavours.
