WHILE most councils are offering a green bin service to recycle green waste, Port Stephens Council will remain with its two bin system unchanged.
According to Council’s Waste Management Coordinator, Aaron Malloy, green waste has been recycled in Port Stephens since 1999 through an advanced resource recovery technology.
“Residents in Port Stephens can be assured that 100% of green waste and food waste in the Local Government Area are recycled without the need for a green bin”, he explained.
Items accepted in the red garbage bin include:
- food scraps
- non-recyclable packaging, eg plastic bags
- green waste
- nappies
- broken household items that cannot be reused or fixed
- used pizza boxes, other paper, cardboard, and aluminium foil with food residuals.
Currently, approximately 50 percent of the waste in the red bin is diverted from landfill.
Council offers residents free green waste drop off days at Raymond Terrace, Karuah, Lemon Tree Passage and Salamander Bay for excess waste.
Residents can also place out green waste to be picked up through the on call kerbside collection.
Residents who want the third bin for their green waste can organise an additional red bin.
