From the club’s World Champion Surf Boat Crew , to the Shelton Family who created history by rowing as a family in the Whale Cup, now young nipper Sophie Howarth has joined the ranks having been selected in the Hunter Branch Representative Team.

Brad Love told News of the Area “It was so good to see Sophie Howarth selected from our Nippers Squad, and see her go so well in elite competition.”

“The Hunter Branch team placed third overall against all Surf Life Branches in New South Wales, a fantastic achievement when you compare the number of competitors selected from other branches,” Peter Rogers said.

Sophie placed third in the 12 years sprint and joined the 12/13/14/ mixed relay to achieve another third place and a fifth in the 12 years Cameron relay.

“The Club is so proud of her achievements and shows the continued respect our local Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club has in achieving representative success,” Peter said.

Ahead of the hectic holiday season, the Club has been busy training new members, refreshing skills and educating nippers.

“Thanks to our club trainers, five new members have gained Life Saving Awards of their Bronze Surf Medallion, Advanced Resuscitation Proficiency and Spinal Management Certificates. Even our younger members are gaining skills with two of the clubs 13 year old’s gaining their Surf Rescue Certificate,” Peter Rogers said.

“Now the holiday season is upon us it’s timely to recall there have been three drownings within sight of the Surf Club while Bennett’s Beach was unpatrolled.”

So the message is, please swim between the flags.

Peter added, “While there have been countless rescues and accidents within the patrolled area there has never been any loss of life.”
