Authored by News Of The Area reporter, Heather Sharp, who also teaches at the University of Newcastle, it aims to teach children—and adults—that long after conflict ends, the impacts are still felt. The book is a wholly local production, the illustrator is from East Maitland and the publishers are Hunter-based business ‘Legends & Lessons’. Approximately 70 people came to the family-friendly event and were able to see the new Centenary of Armistice Exhibition curated by Mrs Pia Ryeland of the Sketchley Cottage Museum. Heather told News Of The Area, “I hope children and adults enjoy the book.” “I wanted to write a book that was able to make historical facts, which can sometimes be seen as boring, interesting through a story of two children who travel with their parents.” “The two children discover how World War I is still in the lives of French and Belgian people, even 100 years after the end of the conflict.” “Laura Arnull, the book’s illustrator, has created beautiful illustrations to make the words come alive.” “They complement the story perfectly.” In the week after the book launch, the Australian War Memorial confirmed an order to sell the books in their gift shop. Teachers are also well catered for with this book’s release and Stage 3 class-ready resources are provided for free on placement of an order. Developed by the University of Newcastle, the curriculum resources are cross-curricular and linked to the Syllabus.
