THE Newcastle Jets put on a free football clinic for the kids of Coffs Harbour last week and it was a big hit with kids and parents.

Upon arrival the kids received a free Newcastle Jets goodie bag which included a football and signed poster from the players.

The Jets players received a red carpet welcome as they were clapped from the team bus at Coffs Harbour Sport and Recreation Park by an army of doting supporters.

The Jets support crew had set up six pitches so the kids were straight into training drills with the Jets players as they patiently explained each drill and participated in the training.

There was a big emphasis on having fun and the Jets players led by example with big smiles and an insatiable enthusiasm which resonated with the kids.

At the end of the clinic the kids cheered the A-League players back onto the team bus as they devoured the complementary sausage sizzle.

The affable Jets players were a big hit with parents and kids as local dad Lewis Pietrini explained.

“My little one Julia couldn’t wait to have a kick.

“When the players arrived the kids went crazy, it was awesome to see their enthusiasm for the sport.”

Mr Pietrini praised both the professionalism and enthusiasm of the players.

“The drills were creative, fun and team orientated which gave the kids a chance to show their football flair to the A-League players.

“I was very impressed with the players’ involvement and mentoring during the drills.

“The organisation and professional set up was first class and hopefully they continue to provide this community engagement every year,” said Mr Pietrini.

The Jets’ tour of Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour brought back memories for 20-year-old Newcastle Jets midfielder Angus Thurgate.

“I used to play here, and to see them follow in our footsteps is always good.

“It shows there is a pathway out there, if it’s something they want.

“I guess I’m a sign to show that they can do it and there is a pathway,” Thurgate said.

Josh Wiseman’s kids attended the clinic and asked if the Jets could come to training every week.

“My two boys Sebastian and Eli absolutely loved it and asked if they could do it every week,” said Mr Wiseman.

“I thought it was well organised and managed.

“It was great to see the entire Jets squad down there teaching and interacting with so many kids.”

The Newcastle Jets play their first A-League match against the Central Coast Mariners on 31 December and after last week’s performance they will have new fans from the Coffs Coast in support.
