TASTY morsels gave a hint of future culinary delights as the new management of Tea Gardens Country Club’s The Garden Eatery hosted a ‘Taste of Japan’ on Sunday, 20 August. The latest in a series of ‘Taste of Asia’ outings at the Country Club, previously featuring fare from Malaysia and Vietnam, patrons enjoyed Japanese specialties including maki-sushi, yaki-gyoza and takoyaki, as prepared by the new manager Jamie Zhang and his expert sushi chefs. Email us – media@newsofthearea.com.au The sushi came in many varieties, with most diners enjoying a sampling of each, from smoked salmon to crispy chicken katsu, and delicately battered tempura prawns or vegetables. Gyoza, better known as ‘dumplings’ by some, was best served with just the right mix of soy sauce and vinegar, to give the pan-fried pork filling its chance to shine. Takoyaki, meaning ‘cooked octopus’, transported others to the brightly-lit avenues of Doutonbori, Osaka, where the local Japanese and visitors alike indulge in the hot street food surrounded by the illumination and sounds of the famous tourist district. For many Club patrons, it was the first chance to enjoy expertly crafted Japanese cuisine, the likes of which would normally be scarce outside the big cities, under the clear, azure sky of the Club’s Pavilion, overlooking Port Stephens in the distance. Jamie has stepped into some pretty big shoes, with the recent, sad departure of Jenny Po and Ly Do, who have come to be embraced by the locals for their array of Asian dishes at The Garden Eatery. “Jamie and his team have a strong culinary background in authentic Malaysian cuisines, as well as a passion for Japanese food,” Jenny told NOTA. “I learnt all I know through family business,” explained Jamie, who comes to us from a long line of exotic gastronomy providers, as well as owning Chinese and Italian gelato restaurants in Maitland and Hamilton, and a specialty Japanese joint in Sydney.
