New adventure with plans well underway Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest by News Of The Area - Modern Media - June 16, 2016June 16, 2016 Manning District Scout Commissioner Stan Woodrow, Cub Scout Lily Denton, Scout Hollee Denton, Parent Helper Kim Denton and Deputy Chairperson Group Support Committee Peter Denton BE prepared for a new adventure with plans well underway to re-establish the Scout Group in Hawks Nest. A public meeting will be held to discuss the plans and all community members are invited to attend. Manning District Scout Commissioner Stan Woodrow said being involved in Scouts was “absolutely amazing” and was all about having fun while learning skills for life. “Scouts can go anywhere and can do anything, you can even get your pilots licence through the Scouts,” Mr Woodrow said. “We certainly do tie knots, but it’s much more than this with an enormous range of activities to get involved in.” Experiences include learning traditional Scouting skills through to more extreme challenges such as water sports, abseiling, rock climbing, hiking, alpine skiing and sailing. Mr Woodrow said he has taken groups on overnight excursions to Taronga Zoo and Cockatoo Island and some groups have gone overseas. “There’s a group that does television work and there’s a Jamboree every three years,” he said. “We especially encourage teamwork and the kids have a lot of fun and learn as they go.” The Scout programs cater for young people aged six to 25 years. Mr Woodrow said although Scouts have been a part of the Hawks Nest community for 75 years, there has not been an active group in the area during the last 15 years. Email us today for a quote: ads@mcnota.com.au “Many people in the area have helped, including members of the Progress Association, the Rotary Club and parents of the Scouts,” Mr Woodrow said. “Tea Gardens RSL donated an Australian flag to the group and I was very proud to carry that flag in the Anzac March this year.” The public meeting will be held on Thursday 23 June at 7pm at the Old Library in Hawks Nest.
