Both teams faced off against some tough opponents in the Newcastle City Blues with the U13 Boys going down 43 to 36 and the U15 Youth Girls missing out on the trophy by a single point.

It was a cool and overcast day and it was reflected in both teams as they kept their heads to fight back to level scores and give themselves a chance at collecting the trophies.

The U13 Boys were up against it in their match, but were able to persevere from 13 points down at the half to level scores going into the final stanza.

The lads battled all the way but couldn’t hold on and with no reserves left and no time on the clock they went down by a major and a behind.

For the U15 Youth Girls it was one of the closest matches of the year.

The first quarter was a real arm wrestle with scores finishing 2 to 1 in the Blues favour at the first whistle.

It was going to stay that way for most of the match with both teams able to slot a major in the second quarter and at the main break it was City ahead 10 to 7.

The Marlin girls came out fighting in the third term and were able to level scores at 10 a piece and going into the final quarter the momentum was with them.

Footy can be a cruel game sometimes and it wasn’t to be with City edging out the Marlin girls by the narrowest of margins to finish 12 to 11.

There was still plenty to celebrate on the day for the Marlins club though, with young gun Kai Jansen taking home the Best & Fairest for the U13’s comp.
