National Landcare Program review released

THE Australian Government on Monday released the final report of the review into the second phase of the $1.1 billion National Landcare Program (NLP).

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud and Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said the NLP is achieving positive outcomes for Australia’s unique environment and natural resources while supporting jobs in Australia’s agriculture sector.

“Investments through the NLP are continuing to improve soil, water and biodiversity at a local scale. “

“The review has identified opportunities to scale up these outcomes from local level to regional and national scales,” Minister Littleproud said.

“The review shows that grassroots organisations and volunteers are critical to delivering projects that make a difference in our communities.

“Continued support for projects that encourage volunteers will be essential for the next phase of the program.

“Both agricultural and environmental outcomes will continue to be a key focus.”

Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said Landcare is a $1.1 billion commitment to practical environmental action inspiring communities, Traditional Owners and land managers to play key roles in caring for our environment.

“Phase two of the program has supported a range of critical projects from tackling the impacts of feral animals and pests on threatened species, to supporting Ramsar wetlands and World Heritage sites, creating new Indigenous Protected Areas, establishing more than 29.5 million trees under the 20 Million Trees program,” Minister Ley said.

“It is a program that inspires everyday people to do extraordinary things for our environment and I would like to thank all who provided their feedback, Landcare groups, volunteers, regional NRM bodies, farmers, researchers and members or the public, for their contribution to the review process.”
