Nambucca Women Kick Off 2021 Campaign

Nambucca over 30’s women team in first match of the season.

THE Nambucca Strikers women’s over 30’s kicked off their 2021 campaign against the Woolgoolga Cougars last Thursday at the Coffs Harbour Sport and Leisure Park.

The Strikers opened the scoring after 15 minutes but went down 5-2 in an entertaining match which new coach Rhys Jones took plenty of positives from.

“If this is how the team played together in the first game I am very excited to see what this team can do when they build up some more understanding and cohesion,” said Rhys.

Club secretary Keily Chase was on the sidelines cheering on the newly assembled team.

“A lot was taken away from this match by the Nambucca team under a new coach and few new players started the season with great promise,” said Keily.

Despite a stuttering start, there’s a lot happening at the football club as Keily shared with News Of The Area.

“This year started off a bit kerfuffled, we had to cancel our annual Nambucca Challenge Cup again, last year was COVID this year was floods, so we have moved it to the October long weekend and we are really excited.

“We have teams from Mooloolaba to Sydney and everywhere in between hoping to compete in October,” said Keily.

The surge in female football has been a driving force behind the growth in football and with a female president and
secretary at the helm it’s no surprise Nambucca are on the front foot to kick on.

“We run the Kick On for women program every Monday night to help encourage female participation in the sport
and we have a new coach for the women’s over 30s and the women’s senior team who is focusing on player development.

“We also have lots of new coaches coming up from the junior ranks which is great to see, our comp will run from April through to September for the competitive winter comp with teams in nearly every age group.

“In summer we run our six a side competition that went gangbusters, we will run it again this year on Wednesday nights and it will probably go from October through to February,” said Keily.
